Scent Taboo in Western Culture
In the Western culture, discussing or focusing on scent is often considered taboo. However, scent is a powerful and often overlooked sense that significantly influences our emotions and social interactions. In contrast, the Malaysian tribe, the Jahai people, place great importance on the sense of smell. For them, scent is an integral part of their communication and social structure, demonstrating the potential benefits of embracing olfactory awareness.
Re-appropriation of this lost sense might come with a set of problems in societal acceptance. Read more about this on our Bioethics page.
Anosmia: The Invisible Struggle
Anosmia, the loss of the sense of smell, affects millions of people worldwide. This condition can lead to a diminished quality of life, as those affected are unable to perceive smells that can evoke memories, warn of dangers, or enhance the taste of food. More importantly, anosmia can hinder social interactions by removing an essential layer of emotional perception. Our device aims to address this by providing olfactory stimuli that can enhance emotional and social experiences.
We spoke with an anosmic person to learn more about the condition and to guide our product design. You can check out our interview with Tara Scudder here.
